Asian Needle Ants: Now in Arkansas

You may already be familiar with fire ants, but a new and potentially more dangerous pest is spreading fast across the Southeast — and it's been found right here in Arkansas. Meet the Asian needle ant (Brachyponera chinensis), a stealthy, stinging invader known for painful bites and hidden nests.

At My Bug Guys, we're keeping a close eye on this invasive species and helping homeowners stay safe and protected.

What Are Asian Needle Ants?

Asian Needle Ants

Asian needle ants are small, dark brown to black insects with orange-colored legs and jaws. They’re originally from Southeast Asia but have been spreading across southern U.S. states, including South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and now parts of Arkansas.

Unlike fire ants, they don’t build obvious mounds. Instead, they nest in cool, shaded places like:

  • Under mulch and landscaping

  • Beneath logs and stones

  • Inside rotting wood and damp soil

Because they’re less visible, they often go undetected — until someone gets stung.

Why They're a Big Problem

While Asian needle ants may look small and harmless, their sting packs a serious punch. Victims often describe a sharp, needle-like pain, followed by swelling, itching, and, in some cases, severe allergic reactions.

Health risks include:

  • Painful stings that can flare up again hours later

  • Hives, swelling, nausea, and dizziness

  • Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction in allergic individuals

If you or a family member is allergic to insect stings, these ants pose a serious health risk — even more so than fire ants in some cases.

Are They Spreading?

Unfortunately, yes. Asian needle ants are aggressive invaders that displace native ant species and even outcompete fire ants in some areas. And because their nests are so well hidden, infestations can grow large before they're even noticed.

Once they’re established on your property, DIY methods rarely work.

How to Protect Your Family & Property

The best defense against Asian needle ants is a combination of prevention and professional control.

Here’s what you can do:

✅ Keep mulch, leaves, and wood debris cleared away from your home
✅ Wear gloves when gardening or handling yard materials
✅ Seal gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and your foundation
✅ Be cautious when working in shaded areas, especially after rain
